Wednesday, March 25th, 2009
I learned today about this video documentary from a study group meeting of the famous Fujisawa Shuko, Honorary Kisei (he won the Kisei title 6 consecutive years, 1976 to 1982): In this video we can see several famous Japanese players training together: Takemiya Masaki, Takao Shinji, O Meien, Yuki Satoshi, Sakai Hideyuki. Kisei Title, Game 6, Day 1

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
Game 6 of the Kisei Title started today. The score is 3:2 in favor of the title holder, Yamashita Keigo. The challenger, Yoda Norimoto (playing the first move in the photo below) needs to win both this and the last game in order to capture the title.

Here is another photo of the two players, enjoying the sound of the thick goban on the day before the match started, and taking photos for the press, while Rin Kaiho (seated) and Takemiya Masaki (standing in the back) are watching.

Two unusual moves

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008
I followed a live game on Cyberoro: Takemiya Masaki 9p against Yamada Takuji 7p. Yamada was an A-class insei when I became insei in Japan, then he soon won the pro qualification. We both lived in the “Igo Kenshu Center” (Go study center) for a while (so did Kato Keiko who is currently defending her Meijin title against Xie Yimin).

Yamda Takuji

Yamada played 2 unusual moves against Takemiya in the beginning of the game. First White 8 is unusual (normally White plays hane below Black 7):

Then look at White 38: tsuke against the hoshi stone!

I guess somebody was in a quite inspired mood :-) It payed off for Yamada, since he won the game by 2.5 points. Link to complete game record.

What to do of an empty triangle when Takemiya Sensei’s watching? Here is a nice suggestion from the lovely emptytriangle.com Go comics website.

Meijin Title : 1-0 for the title holder Takao Shinji

Thursday, September 6th, 2007
Meijin Title started yesterday: title holder Takao Shinji won the first game by 4.5 points against the challenger and previous Meijin title holder, Cho U. Takao built a huge moyo starting from the lower side, and that turned in the end into a huge territory. It was interesting to see Takemiya giving the public game commentary – he must have been very happy with Black’s strategy, since he’s the one who’s name is associated with large moyo strategies. Next game: September 19, 20.
