Kong Jie Wins LG Cup

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Kong Jie of China has all the reasons to be happy: he has defeated Lee Changho of S. Korea in the final of the international LG Cup.

Kong Jie won the best-of-three final with two straight wins. Since he has already won Samsung Cup and Asian TV Cup, this win puts Kong Jie in the number one position in the world judging by the number of international competitions won in the last year.

Here is the record of the first game. Kong Jie, playing white, won by 2.5 points.

Kong Jie Wins Chinese Qiwang Cup

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Kong Jie defeated Chen Yaoye (Tianyuan titleholder) in the 5th Qiwang final. Qiwang Cup is a knock-out tournament with one game in the final.

This must be Kong Jie’s best year so far, as he won the international Samsung Cup, as well as international Asian TV Cup, while in China he won CCTV Cup and now Qiwang Cup.

The record of the final game is here. Kong Jie (white) won by resign.

Kong Jie Wins International Samsung Cup

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

I don’t think the sponsors of the international Samsung Cup were very happy this year, since no South Korean player made it into the final. In fact, the final matched two Chinese players: Kong Jie 9 dan (who defeated Gui Li, also of China, in the semifinals) and Qiu Jun 8 dan of China (who eliminated Lee Changho of South Korea in the other semifinal).

Kong Jie won the best-of-three match against Qiu Jun after two straight wins. Interestingly, Kong Jie also played in last year’s Samsung Cup final match, but he lost 0:2 against Lee Sedol.

The game record of the 1st game is here. Kong Jie (white) won by 5.5 points.

Kong Jie Wins Asian TV Cup

Thursday, June 11th, 2009
Kong Jie defeated Lee Sedol in the final of the 21st Asian TV Cup. To qualify in the final, he also defeated Kang Dongyun and Lee Changho. Interestingly, Kong Jie started this tournament as a 7-dan. He earned promotion to 9-dan after defeating Lee Changho yesterday to qualify in the final.

Lee Sedol won the previous two editions of this tournament. He recently announced his one year and a half retirement from professional life. Here is the game record of the final.
