Korea Wins WAGC With Perfect Score

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Sung Bong Ha of South Korea won the 29th WAGC with a perfect score, 8-0, after defeating Hong Kong in the last round.

The rest of the top places aren’t settled yet, but it looks like Fernando Aguilar of Argentina is assured of 2nd place if he wins against Israel in the last round (due to his high SOS), while China and Japan fight for the 3rd place.

29th WAGC after 4 rounds

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

The 29th WAGC (World Amateur Go Championship) reached its halfpoint after 4 rounds out of 8.

The results so far are very surprising: out of the 5 players with perfect score, only 2 are from Asia (the representatives of China and S. Korea) while the other three are from Luxembourg (the WAGC veteran Laurent Heiser), Argentina (the famous Fernando Aguilar), and Czech Republic (Jan Hora).

Japan has only 3 points after the loss to Korea, and same for Hong Kong after losing to China.
Taiwan lost to both Thailand and Hungary so it’s out of the game this year.

Is this going to be a “Revolution WAGC”? We’ll see in the next few rounds.

Teaching game with Kato Masao

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

I wrote a new article: Teaching game with Kato Masao. It is based on a 3-stones handicap teaching game I received from Kato Masao 9p back in 1990 when I was 3 dan and I represented Romania at the WAGC.

What motivated me to write the article at this point was the godiscussions.com thread “Asking professionals for serious games” - in particular Tommie’s request there.

I hope you enjoy it!

Interview with Cristian “Solaris” Pop

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

I just published an interview with Cristian Pop - know as “Solaris” on some Go servers - the 7 dan from Romania who won an excellent 4th place at the recent World Amateur Go Championship.

He also has an online Go school - see his website if you are interested to join: http://www.goschool.resurse.com/

How to get the kifu from the last WAGC round?

Friday, June 1st, 2007

While WAGC has been over for a couple of days, the organizers still haven’t posted the game records from the last round.

They did post links to the games they recorded at this link: http://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/amakisen/worldama/28/e/kifu.htm but the links don’t work. For instance, I want to see the China-Romania game which is supposed to be at this link, but all I get is an error page.

Also, CyberOro - which is the only Go server I know of that did live broadcasts for a couple of games from each round (kudos to them for this!) has unfortunately chosen to upgrade their servers just before the last 2 WAGC rounds or so, and has only updated their Asian client - while all English users have been left in the dark for now.

Does anybody know how to find the kifu from the last WAGC round? Or how to communicate with the WAGC organizers to ask them to fix the broken links at the above mentioned web address?

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

In the last round China plays Romania, Korea plays Denmark and Japan plays UK.

China is leading WAGC 6-0

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

After defeating Korea in round 6 of the World Amateur Go Championship, China is the sole leader with a perfect score: 6-0.

I hope to see a China-Japan game in one of the remaining 2 rounds.

Japan had what looked like a difficult game against Germany, but Hironobu Mori managed to kill a big group of the ex-insei Benjamin Teuber in a surprise attack late in the game, and won the game.

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Some important results from round 5 of WAGC: Korea defeated Japan by 9.5 points, while China defeated Taiwan by resignation.

China and Korea will be matched in the next round, as the only undefeated participants.
