Kiseido Publishes Out-of-Print Books in PDF Format

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

This is very cool news: Kiseido Digital is extending their PDF offer soon, to include out-of-print Go books.

(I also wrote a blog entry when I first heard about their PDF GoWorld offering.)

Here are the first PDF Go books that will be available:

  • What’s your Rating?, by Miyamoto Naoki
  • Kato’s Attack and Kill, by Kato Masao
  • Enclosure Josekis, by Takemiya Masaki
  • All About Thickness, by Ishida Yoshio
  • The Breakthrough to Shodan, by Miyamoto Naoki.

They seem to sell them together, as a “bookshelf”, for a total price of US$39.95.

First game of Honinbo Title starts today

Wednesday, May 9th, 2007

Today is day 1 of the first game in Honinbo Title match.
Yoda Norimoto is challenging Takao Shinji.

It is interesting to see that the match is between the authors of last 2 Go books I read: Takao Shinji wrote “Pure and Simple: Takao’s Astute Use of Brute Force” and Yoda Norimoto wrote “Vital Points and Skillful Finesse for Sabaki”.

(I bought both books from slateandshell.com a couple of months ago, I finished Yoda’s book and I’m almost done with Takao’s book - both are wonderful books, I highly recommend them).

So let’s see what style is prevailing this year: “pure and simple” or “sabaki” :-)

“Flowing waters do not compete to be first”

The title of this blog entry is from the book “First Kyu” by Sung-Hwa Hong.

I wrote an article on this book which contains my review. Just to summarize it here: it is a wonderful book (about youth, love, Go and life in general), with a lot of interesting information about the Korean Go scene in late 60’s and early 70′, and very sound Go advice on how to study.

Read the whole review in the “Articles” section on my website.

I’ll go now to replay the “blood coughing game” that the book describes so nicely:

On a rainy day when I fall into loneliness and despair, I replay the game of Intetsu’s. Powerless against moves unfairly coached by ghosts, Intetsu’s stones sigh as they did on a hot summer day in 1835.

“If you want to get stronger, read this book”

Monday, February 12th, 2007

I finished reading (actually re-re-re-…-reading) one of my favorite Go books: “Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go” by Toshiro Kageyama. The title of this blog entry is the first sentence from the book.

It was delightful, as it was every times I read it in the past, even if it got me a little depressed when I missed quite a few of the reading problems - so it is time for me to go back to the tsume-go books.

I wrote a review.

Just one little quote from the book here:

“Black 1 and 3 are wrong. Do they look natural to you? Then you will have to reverse your thought process one hundred eighty degrees if you ever want to play correctly.”
