European and US Go Congresses

Both European and US Go Congresses are over now. These are the major Go events for amateurs outside of Asia. The European Go Congress was dominated by visiting Korean amateurs, just like in the past several years. This year Kim Eunkuk, Hwang In-seong, Kim Joon Sang and Oh Chi-Min (the latest living in Germany) were tied with 8 wins and 2 loses. They were followed by Jun Sang-Youn (Korea), Alexandre Dinerchtein (Russia), Catalin Taranu (Romania), Csaba Mero (Hungary) and Cristian Pop (Romania), tied with 7 wins and 3 loses. The European champion, Alexandre Dinerchtein, was decided by SOS (sum of opponents scores) (although he lost the direct game with last year’s European champion, Catalin Taranu). You can find the complete tournament table here. Also, the tournament bulletins are here (including commented games). The US Go Congress has two main events: the North American Ing Masters and the US Open. The first one was very surprisingly won by the 18 years old amateur Andy Liu. He defeated professionals Yang Yilun 7p, Feng Yun 9p and Jiang Minjiu 7p and won the title with a perfect 5:0 score. Tournament table here. The US Open was won, just like last year, by Kim Myeong-Wan, 8p professional from Korea, currently living in the Los Angeles area. Kim also defeated computer-Go program Mogo in a 7-stones handicap demonstration game. Tournament table here.
