No goban? No problem! (part 3)
Here’s another version of the “No goban? No problem!” series (previous ones are here and here).

Link to original photo page.
I’ve played Go like this myself a couple of times, it is an interesting experience (and it needs some cooperation from the opponent, too, when deciding where the “virtual lines” are).

Too easy !
What would be really interesting is to play “one color go” with no goban…

Too easy!
Try playing random color go - both players use black or white stones randomly. You still need to remember which stone was played by which player but random black and white patterns will throw you off.

Hello !
I’m the guy who shot this photo. It was taken during the 2008 Orsay’s Tournament, in Orsay, France. After the end of the tournament, before final ceremony, Miléna (black, left) asked Géraud (white, right, off field) to play a friendly quick game. But the gobans were already taken away by the staff, and there remained two bowls of stones. Géraud sayed something like “No problem ! We have stones, we don’t need any goban !” And here they went… The funny thing is that at the end of the game, they discovered that the game was actually played “by accident” as on a 20×23 board !
(Please, the next time you want to add a Flickr photo on your blog, ask the author first. There’s no legal obligation to that, but, well, we’re civilized people… Anyway, you have now my full authorisation for this one, even if you thought you didn’t need it. Nice blog !)

Hi, AstroJR,
Thanks for your permission!
And sorry for not asking for it in the first place - I saw the license is “public”.
I’ll have to get more familiar with the Flickr licenses, especially since I have an automatic Go-related photo display on my website.
Very interesting to hear, too, how the size of the board changed in the end
I assume there was no counting after all, was it?
May 19th, 2008 at 11:43 am
There was no complete counting, they just agreed that one of them had won.
For the license question, I don’t really know the details… Whenever you post a Flickr public photo, all that Flickr asks for is to give a link for the original, and you made it perfectly. But a few words to the author are welcome, it’s just a matter of… hum, er… say politeness ?

Flickr authors’ emails aren’t published - or maybe I am missing something, as I haven’t used Flickr much - do you know if there is a way to contact a Flickr author directly on the site or so?
