American Go Yearbook
I got my new and shiny “American Go Yearbook” in the mail yesterday.
It looks very nice (except for the quality of the diagrams, yikes for that… looks like something printed with a printer from 15 years ago).
I liked a lot the “where should X play next” problems taken from top US games, with short comments by the players.
Also, I was sad to read the very bad review for the new “The Go Master” movie (it’s about the life of Go Seigen) – I want to see the movie anyway, hope it will become available.

I got mine as well. In my copy there were 5 or 6 two page spreads that were blank. It seems rather random and the blank pages are attributed page numbers (though unprinted). Did I get a bad issue or is this a universal issue? I suppose it could be intentional, but I sure couldn’t figure out the breaks. At least my article (Teaching Pains) made it in
Just checked mine: no blank pages at all. You must have a very special copy
Where is your “Teaching Pains” article? I went through the table of content at least twice and didn’t find the title.
I don’t have a copy with me so I don’t know the page number. It was a column (originally in the eJournal) under the heading The Playing Life. I also didn’t find it in the table of contents, but given the blank pages I wasn’t paying too much attention to that.
I think the article is “Learning Pains” on page 54.
Thank Robert – found it!
Nice article, Uglyboxer
The title you mentioned here (”Teaching Pains”) is indeed a better fit than “Learning Pains”.
Thanks Sorin,
I contacted Chris Garlock and they sent me a new copy, this time will all the pages nicely filled.
I am also writing a review of The Go Master (2006 – about Go Seigen), which I’ve seen twice in NYC. I think Chris & Roy’s review was a bit harsh, though I agree with most of their points. Yes the film was confusing. No it didn’t teach much about go. But still I found a lot to admire in the film, and hope you get to see it. My review will be published in a Chinese go journal, or else I’d send you a link. -marilyn
Hi Marilyn, I’d like to read your review when it’s published (hopefully in English
)
